Every permit type in BuildPass is made up of three templates: Application, Enacting and Closeout. Each template covers a different stage of the permit lifecycle. This article explains what each permit template is for and how they fit together, so you can configure your permit types with confidence.
Why permits use three templates
High-risk work such as hot works, confined space entry or working at heights needs different checks at different times: before work is approved, each time work actually happens, and when the work is finished. Splitting the permit into three templates lets you capture the right information at each stage.
The Application template
The Application is the upfront request. A worker fills out the Application to raise the permit, and an admin reviews and approves it before any work starts. This is the only stage where a formal approval review happens.

The Enacting template
The Enacting template is the day-of, per-use checklist. It is presented each time a worker starts or stops work under an already approved permit. For example, on a hot works permit this is the check completed each time the physical work happens. The Enacting stage is not a review step, and it can recur multiple times over the life of a single permit, such as daily.

The Closeout template
The Closeout is completed once the work is finished, to formally sign off and close the permit. Both the worker and the admin complete a closeout, but for different purposes: the worker's submission is a Request to Close, and the admin's completion is what actually closes the permit out.

The full permit lifecycle
Application — worker submits, admin approves.
Enacting — worker completes the checklist each time work starts or stops. This stage can repeat.
Closeout — worker requests to close, admin finalises.
