How SMS sending and opt-outs work in BuildPass (Australia)

This article explains what SMS you can send through BuildPass, who you can send it to, how recipients opt out, and what still gets delivered

Written by Joanna Zervakis

From 1 July 2026, new Australian rules change how business SMS is sent and identified. This article explains what SMS you can send through BuildPass, who you can send it to, how recipients opt out, and what still gets delivered. BuildPass's SMS Sender ID is registered under ACMA's new register, so your SMS keeps sending under a recognised sender name.

What SMS can I send through BuildPass?

BuildPass SMS is for operational, project-related communications, such as:

  • current site updates

  • delivery notices

  • workflow notifications

  • sign-on reminders

  • compliance reminders

  • safety communications

  • Emergency Module messages

  • essential security messages such as authentication or one-time passcodes

BuildPass SMS must not be used for marketing or promotional messages.

Who should I send SMS to?

Only send SMS to people who reasonably need the information for the relevant project or operational purpose. A previous induction, previous attendance or old worker record does not by itself mean someone should receive SMS.

Can recipients opt out?

Recipients can opt out of eligible non-critical workflow, project and broadcast SMS. Every non-critical text carries an unsubscribe link, and BuildPass applies the opt-out through its preference and suppression systems. Opt-out status may not always appear in customer-facing screens immediately.

For workflow SMS, recipient eligibility and suppression depend on how the workflow is configured and when it was created or updated. Review your Workflows regularly to keep recipient rules current.

What messages can still be sent?

Emergency messages sent through the Emergency Module, and essential security messages such as authentication and one-time passcodes, are always delivered and cannot be opted out of. SMS delivery is not guaranteed, so it should not be your only channel for time-critical safety messages.

What should I do if someone asks me directly to stop texting them?

Stop sending affected non-critical SMS to that person, and record the request in BuildPass or contact BuildPass support as soon as practicable. They can always unsubscribe via the link.

Can I use BuildPass SMS for marketing?

No. BuildPass SMS is not a marketing platform.

Where can I read the full terms?

For the full detail, see the Australia SMS Messaging Terms (buildpass.ai/sms-messaging-terms), Terms of Service (buildpass.ai/terms-of-service) and Privacy Policy (buildpass.ai/privacy-policy).
