Note: Companies invited to upload documents also have access to the SWMS Builder directly via the document request link, making it easy for them to create and submit a SWMS for the project.
Why use the SWMS Builder
The SWMS Builder is designed to save time without cutting corners. With over 28 pre-built templates covering common high-risk work activities, you can create a compliant, project-specific SWMS in minutes. All hazards, controls, PPE, and plant and equipment sections are pre-populated based on the template you choose, so you spend less time drafting and more time reviewing.
How to build a SWMS
Step 1 — Open the SWMS Builder
In the left-hand menu, navigate to SWMS, then select SWMS Builder.
Step 2 — Select your project and company
Choose the project you're building the SWMS for, then select the specific company (subcontractor) the SWMS applies to. Once selected, click Open SWMS Builder.
Step 3 — Choose your starting point
You have three options:
Use one of your saved templates — reuse a SWMS you've built and saved previously
Use a BuildPass template — choose from 28+ pre-built templates covering common high-risk work types
Start from scratch — build a fully custom SWMS
Step 4 — Select a template
Browse the available templates and select the one that best matches the work being performed. In this example, we're using the Working at Height template.
Step 5 — Review and complete project details
Once the template loads, your project details will be pre-populated. You'll need to:
Select the project contact to add to the SWMS
Add an overview if required
Review the high-risk controls and add or remove any that are relevant to your specific project
Step 6 — Review Plant and Equipment
The Plant and Equipment section will be pre-populated based on the template. Review and adjust as needed for your project.
Step 7 — Review Hazards and Controls
All hazards and controls included in the template will be pre-populated. It is highly recommended that you review each control carefully before submitting.
You can:
Remove any controls that don't apply
Add additional controls specific to your project
Step 8 — Review PPE
In the PPE section, review the pre-populated personal protective equipment list. Add or remove items to match the requirements of your specific job.
Step 9 — Add attachments (optional)
Use the Attachments section to upload any supporting documents relevant to the SWMS.
Step 10 — Save as template or proceed to review
At the final stage, you can choose to save the SWMS as a template for future use on other projects, or skip this step to use it as a one-off.
Step 11 — Review and submit
Review the completed SWMS to confirm all details meet your project requirements. Once you're satisfied, select Submit to finalise the SWMS.
